Changing Lives, One Story at a Time - 20 Years of Hope and Empowerment with Ra Foundation

Every day, we encounter heartbreaking stories: children abandoned by family, used for illicit activities, or orphaned due to domestic violence. The question arises: What will happen to these kids?
While nothing can replace the loss of a parent, society can create a nurturing environment where all children, regardless of their past, can thrive. At Ra Foundation, we strive to provide love, support, and a positive upbringing to children who have faced deep trauma. Through our structured programs, we ensure they find joy, pursue education, and fulfill their potential.

For 20 years, our Happy Kids Program has empowered countless young lives. As we celebrate this milestone, we share 20 inspiring stories of resilience, determination, and success. These stories showcase the transformative impact of Ra Foundation and the profound difference we have made in these children's lives.


Sachin Singh, born in 2003, embodies hope and aspiration in the face of adversity. Raised in a slum environment by a taxi driver and a homemaker, Sachin's family recognized the challenges their children faced in such circumstances. Determined to provide a better future, they enrolled Sachin in our Happy Kids Program in 2011. Sachin was an all-rounder, brilliant in academics, a champion in sports, and a musician. Completing his schooling at Sanjeewan Vidyalaya, Sachin chose to pursue commerce with the intention of a career in finance. He was so keen that he would also part-time as a teacher at a local coaching centre. All throughout he know that he wanted to analyse the stock markets or be a broker. And if that wasn’t challenging enough, he also spared sometime to make YouTube videos to channel his creative energies. He completed his Bachelor's in Financial Management and currently works at 63 Moons, where he continues to pursue his dreams and make strides towards a better tomorrow. Sachin's journey serves as a testament to the power of determination and resilience in overcoming challenges and striving for the best he could.

 
At a young age, Kumar faced the heartbreaking loss of his father, setting off a series of challenges for his family. Kumar's family belonged to a community where they would move from place to place in search of new work. With his mother and two sisters, they lived in makeshift accommodations, constantly moving from one place to another, leading to frequent changes in schools. This instability resulted in increased absenteeism and the potential risk of dropping out of school altogether. Enrolling in a boarding school in Panchgani, through Ra Foundation, proved to be the turning point in Kumar's life. Here, Kumar flourished academically and also developed a passion for sports. After school, Kumar pursued his dreams by obtaining a degree in Hospitality Management from Sophia Polytechnic. He achieved a significant milestone by securing a position as a pastry chef in a renowned restaurant. After having to work for some time in the kitchen, he decided to switch to service and is currently working at 'Malido Cafe' at Kala Ghoda. Kumar has haboured a dream for far too long - To own a place which he calls home. His next goal is to make that come true.


Manisha comes from a family that has been facing massive financial hardships. Her father, the only earning member, of a family of 6 including a special child, suffered from chronic asthma and was inconsistent with his work and earnings. The family was running on a really mearge income. After getting enrolled in Happy Kids Program in the year 2012, she has shown a remarkable change in her personality. She completed her std 10th from Silverdale High School, Panchgani, and has completed her Diploma in Lab Technician in Mumbai. She is now working full-time in the blood collection unit of the N. M Medical Lab as a Pathology Technician. Today she earns 3 times her fathers income and is able to provide stability to the family of 5 people. But what matters to her is to be able to improve the living conditions of her family - like fixing the roof that has been dripping for years or renovating the house to make it livable. Becoming a mentor to other Ra students, Manisha emerged as a role model in her community, finding joy in family, medicine, and education. It is in the little things that she discovers happiness, a testament to the transformative impact of Ra's support in transforming lives.


Ambika Kalal, born in 2000, confronted adversity early in life as her father grappled with alcohol and drug abuse, and her mother left, leaving her and her sister in their grandmother's care. Ambika joined the Happy Kids Program in 2009, beginning her educational journey at Silverdale High School, Panchgani. Here she excelled in both academics and extracurricular activities. Ambika found dance as a great way of self expression and continues to pursue it till this day. After returning from the residential school in Panchgani, she graduated with distinction in Hotel Management from an institute in Mumbai . Known for her compassionate nature and self-reliance, Ambika has forged a successful career in the service industry. She has lent her expertise to esteemed establishments such as Fortis Hospital and The Leela in Mumbai before transitioning to the Taj Hotels, Chennai. Ambika's journey serves as a testament to her resilience and determination to overcome obstacles and be an inspiring example of independence


Ashwini Khillare, born in 2000, was raised by her single mother along with her two siblings in Mumbai. Ashwini witnessed her mother's relentless efforts as a saleswoman, trading garlic for plastic bags to make ends meet. Recognizing Ashwini's potential, her mother prioritized her education. In 2013, Ashwini joined the Happy Kids Program and was enrolled in Silverdale High School, where she completed her schooling. As she completed her XIIth, there was an unspoken expectation of every girl in the family - to get married and settle down. Ashwini was the first in her family to break that tradition and graduated with Developmental Counseling in Home Science. Mature and determined as she is, Ashwini enjoys exploring her creative bent of mind by creating digital games and crafts. Currently serving as an Early Years Facilitator at IKEA, she is gaining valuable job experience to help her progress in her career. Her mother is proud of Ashwini's educational achievements and observes remarkable change in her daughter's outlook on life. She is grateful for the path she has carved for herself - a testament to Ashwini's unwavering determination and resilience.


Isha Waghela's lost her father at a tender age and was raised by a single mother. With the loss of the father, the family lost their breadwinner, their home, and practically their life. Despite the circumstances, Isha bravely balanced household duties with her studies, demonstrating maturity beyond her years. Living in her uncle's home was mentally difficult for her family. Recognizing her need for a nurturing environment, the Ra Foundation enrolled Isha in 6th grade at Silverdale High School through the Happy Kids Program. Here, she thrived academically and unearthed her talents in arts, crafts, and sports. Completing her 12th from SNDT college, Isha pursued a Diploma Course in Early Childhood Teacher Education (ECTE) from a prestigious institute. Landing a position as an Assistant Teacher at Kherwadi Mumbai Public School post-diploma, she didn't halt her journey there. She is currently serving as an Early Years Facilitator at KLAY, Mumbai, and is concurrently pursuing a Bachelor in Arts through distance education from Mumbai University. Isha's story vividly illustrates the transformative power of support and determination in conquering adversity.


From being born to blind parents who called the bustling pavements of CST Station their home, to her role as a professional in the corporate world, Rekha’s journey is a testament to the transformative power of a nurturing ecosystem and human care. Her life took a profound turn in 2004 when a compassionate French woman extended her support through the Ra Foundation, facilitating her family's relocation to a safer environment. At Silverdale Residential School in Panchgani, Rekha explored her passion for art, unveiling her innate talent for sketching and creative expression. With relentless dedication, she refined her skills through workshops and internships, immersing herself in the intricate world of Mandala art. Despite her mastery in Mandala art, Rekha made a conscious decision to venture into the corporate world, securing a position at Tech Mahindra in the customer support team. This transition not only provided her with financial stability but also offers a deeper understanding of the real-world dynamics. Through her journey, Rekha not only pursues her dreams but also inspires others, embodying resilience and empowerment every step of the way.


Rohit Salve, born in 1999, weathered a turbulent childhood marred by domestic violence, which tragically claimed his mother's life and led to his father's imprisonment. However, a turning point emerged when he and his sister Renuka were referred to Ra's Happy Kids Program by the Akanksha Foundation in 2007. Transitioning from turmoil to a nurturing environment, Rohit found solace and support from school personnel who aided his adjustment. Despite adversities, Rohit exhibited remarkable academic progress and immersed himself in sports and games. After completing his Bachelor of Business Administration from MMCC, Pune, he embarked on a career in sales at Charagh Din, Colaba, garnering valuable retail experience over three years. Following his passion, he realized his dream of working in sports retail, joining Decathlon, Andheri, where he currently leads the water sports department. He is also pursuing professional boxing on the side. Rohit's journey is a testament to resilience and determination, illustrating how adversity can be overcome with perseverance and support.


Jyotshna Naidu, born in 1998, confronted family challenges with unwavering resilience. Amidst her parents' turbulent relationship and financial strains exacerbated by her father's health issues, Jyotshna prioritized her education and the welfare of her younger siblings. Enrolled in Ra's program in 2008, she attended Sanjeewan Vidyalaya in Panchagani, excelling both academically and in extracurricular pursuits. Completing her BCom from Sushiladevi Deshmukh Vidyalaya & Junior College in Mumbai, Jyotshna continued to thrive academically, earning the admiration of professors and peers alike. Fluent in English, she currently serves as a customer service representative at Reliance, where her empathetic nature shines through her interactions with clients. Jyotshna's journey embodies perseverance and dedication despite adversity, showcasing her ability to overcome obstacles with grace and determination.


Komal Jadhav' lost her father at a young age to a terminal illness. With her mother's occupation as a street sweeper and little support at home, Komal faced massive challenges in her growing years. Recognizing her potential, the Ra Foundation intervened in 2014, enrolling her in 8th grade at Sweet Memories High School, Panchgani, through the Happy Kids Program. It wasn’t an easy transition as Komal came from a semi-English curriculum to a full English curriculum in high school. There was also opposition from the extended family, but Komal's determination and thereafter her achievements became an inspiration, setting an example for others to follow. She has since completed her B.A from Mumbai University along with a professional beautician course. As part of the Happy Kids Program, Komal realized that her true skill lies in her creativity and use of her hands. She received mentorship at the right moments to navigate aspects of her career and life, ensuring that she made the right decisions. She is currently a hairstylist at Kromakay Salon and loving every assignment that comes her way. Sky is the limit for Komal as he pursues her passion, nurturing bigger dreams with each passing day.


Mallika hailed from a very complex joint family situation with multiple challenges - Alcoholism, emotional abuse, patriarchy, poor living conditions and financial uncertainties. She navigated tensions caused by her grandfather's alcohol addiction, compounded by her parents' daily wage labor and therefore lack of parental care. After joining the Happy Kids Program in 2012 and attending Sweet Memories High School, Panchgani, Mallika's parents had great hope in her, motivating her to excel and make a career. Currently in the final year of Mass Communication at SIES college, her interest in advertising and film communication is palpable through her creative projects like directing short films and web series. Mallika's professional experience in Foreign Exchange at Thomas Cook enhances her communication skills and knowledge of currencies. Remarkably, Mallika's growth extends beyond academics. Her increased openness, and willingness to assist with domestic chores, noted by her mother, testify to her capability to balance life. Mallika's sense of assertiveness is an answer to the patriarchal influences in society and exemplifies the transformative power of education and support. Her decisions have enabled her to surmount challenges and pursue her dreams in communications.


Sabinabanu Shaikh, born in 2002, lost her father to a terminal illness. She and her brother were raised singlehandedly by her mother in Mumbai. Sabinabanu had massive challenges growing up, arising from her father's alcoholism and the financial and emotional pressures on the family. Despite societal pressures and financial strains, her mother's dedication and hardwork as a helper at Akanksha Foundation ensured their basic sustenance and prioritized Sabina's education. Enrolled in the Happy Kids Program in 2013, Sabina completed her schooling at Sweet Memories High School in Panchgani. Residential school was a challenge for Sabina as she still battled emotional challenges from the scars of her childhood. She went on to pursue her 12th in commerce at a Mumbai college. Additionally, she undertook a course in Early Childhood Education and currently serves as an Assistant Teacher at Akanksha Foundation. Despite her health challenges, she is studying to pursue her BA. Quiet yet compassionate, Sabina showcases growing responsibility and enhanced communication skills. Her journey reflects her mother's pride and support, illustrating the transformative power of determination and encouragement amidst challenges.


Babli Gupta is the eldest of seven children and lost her mother early on to Cancer. She shouldered family duties, nurturing her younger siblings, while harboring her education dreams. Ra Foundation's Happy Kids Program, in 2015 gave her the opportunity to study, learn and grow, prioritizing her aspirations. Enrolled in Sweet Memories High School, Babli used every opportunity in school whether academic, sports, or arts, to excel. She blossomed into a confident woman, fueled by her love for reading and writing. She was a part of the basketball and volleyball teams in school and was a competitive player. She has now completed a Bachelor of Arts, Psychology from SNDT Churchgate and has been admitted to a Masters of Arts, Industrial & Organizational Psychology, from the same college. She has been facing massive family and social pressure to get married and settle down. Despite personal challenges, she remains resolute, eyeing a Master's in Industrial & Organizational Psychology at SNDT, showcasing her unwavering commitment to education.


Manikandan comes from a challenging family situation, where his father is a handcart puller and his mother has a disability because of which parental care has been missing. Despite facing familial challenges, he recognized the prospect of a brighter future through Ra's intervention. Enrolled in Shri Shivaji Preparatory Military School, Pune, through the Happy Kids Program, he embraced education and safety. Guided by Ra, Manikandan not only excelled academically but also exhibited a passion for sports, aspiring to serve as an army officer. With dedication, he honed his skills in martial arts and karate, garnering medals and acclaim. Pursuing courses in Personality Development and Career Readiness, he showcased a commitment to growth. Despite struggles to complete his 12th Std, Manikandan persevered and eventually secured a managerial role in the startup Petflix, driven by his passion for animals. His journey illustrates that with determination and resilience one can determine their road to success.


After enduring loss and exploitation, including the threat of being sold by his father to people who dealt with drugs, Anish's life took a positive turn thanks to the Akansha Foundation's intervention. Enrolled in 1st grade at Silverdale High School, Panchgani, through the Ra Foundation's Happy Kids Program, Anish flourished in a supportive environment, showcasing talents in technology and the arts. He finally found a stable caring and nurturing environment that helped him thrive. Mentored by the principal at Flora Institute of Technology, Pune, he received accommodation, a paid internship, and the freedom to pursue his studies. Currently in his first year of Bachelor of Computer Application at Bharti Vidyapeeth, Pune, Anish demonstrates enthusiasm and engagement, particularly in Safe Programming, applying his coding skills to practical projects. His proactive approach highlights his commitment to leveraging his degree for real-world applications and career prospects. Anish's story is one of hope that after a dark rainy night appears a colourful rainbow of hope.


Aarya Tambe's lost his father as a young boy. His stay at home mum, had to take up the job of a helper to support Arya and his sister. They did not have a roof over their head and hence lived in a dilapated family house. Despite challenges within his family and community, he excelled at Sweet Memories High School, Panchgani, demonstrating remarkable progress both academically and creatively. From performing arts to sports like cricket and volleyball, his enthusiasm knew no bounds. Even amidst the pandemic disruptions, he achieved an impressive 84% in his 10th board exams. Enrolled in the NDA Academy at Tilak Nagar, he maintains a rigorous schedule, between classroom teaching, tests and his fitness. Currently balancing college education with the NDA exam preparation, Aarya's commitment to his dream of being an army office is his driving force. Despite the demands, he finds fulfillment in peer interactions and activities contribute to his well-being, exemplifying resilience, adaptability, and a commitment to excellence in all aspects of life.


Aditya Kuwar's journey epitomizes resilience and determination amidst adversity. Born into homelessness on a Mumbai train platform, he and his siblings faced early challenges, lacking proper care and education. With support from the Community Outreach Program (CORP) and Ra Foundation's Happy Kids Program, Aditya's life took a positive turn. Enrolled in St. Xavier's High School, Panchgani, his intellect and curiosity blossomed, earning recognition for his academic achievements. Despite his difficult upbringing, Aditya remains a caring older brother, especially to his sister Harshada. Aspiring to be a NBA player, his story reflects hope and perseverance, illustrating the transformative impact of education and support. Currently pursuing junior college at St. Andrews College after scoring 85% in 10th std, he's advancing to 12th grade. Devoted to community service, he teaches English to CORP kids. 


Chandan's was orphaned at a young age with his father's desertion and their mother's passing away. Chandan and his sister Sonali found themselves in the care of their paternal grandmother, uncle, and cousins, struggling in a cramped slum room. Recognizing the dire situation, the Ra Foundation intervened, enrolling them in the Happy Kids Program in 2016. Chandan, at age 9, displayed remarkable compassion and collaboration, often assisting others despite their circumstances.  Chandan's strong thinking skills and leadership qualities reflect his resilience and determination. Chandan aced sports in his school playing football, basket ball and his all time favorite volley ball Currently, Chandan has scored an impressive 79% in his 10th boards and is preparing for college. His passion for volleyball, highlighted by his district-level participation, fuels his ambition to become a volleyball coach. With his drive and dedication, Chandan is poised for success in both academics and sports, eager to make a positive impact in his community.


Ujjwal Ghaiwat's life began with hardship, facing loss and financial struggle after his father's death when he was just two weeks old. Raised by his mother, elder sister, and bedridden grandmother, he grappled with direction and support. Recognizing his need, Ra Foundation intervened, enrolling him in St. Xavier’s High School, Panchgani, through the Happy Kids Program. In this nurturing environment, Ujjwal learned discipline, cleanliness, sportsmanship, and academics. Now, awaiting his 12th-grade results from Siddharth College, Ujjwal focuses on personal development, pursuing courses like BCom and Management at Mumbai University, while actively involved in running his mother's catering business. His journey exemplifies resilience, perseverance, and a holistic approach to personal and professional growth, blending academic achievements with entrepreneurial endeavors and family responsibilities. He aims to start his own business someday.


Khaja Shaikh comes from a challenging family background, living with his mother and siblings after his father left. The toxic environment at home & the neighborhood led him to develop negative behaviors. To provide a nurturing environment, Ra Foundation enrolled Khaja at Sweet Memories High School, Panchgani. With support from his mentors, teachers, and peers, Khaja began to overcome his negative tendencies. However, personal issues caused him to lose touch with the program, leading to a temporary pause in his education. After demonstrating renewed commitment, Khaja was re-enrolled in the 10th grade at Anjuman Islamic High School in Mumbai, as opposed to residential school. His dedication to academics and cricket flourished, and seeing this Ra enrolled him in professional cricket coaching. Within 3 days of the coaching, seeing his performance on the field, his coach selected him for a cricket tournament. Khaja also aspires to become a social worker and pursue a Bachelor's of Social Work degree, showcasing the transformative impact of Ra Foundation’s support and guidance.

Each narrative shines as a beacon of hope, resilience, and transformation, demonstrating how the right support can truly change lives and create a brighter future.
