Lakshmi’s mother abandoned her and her brother due to domestic issues. Lakshmi’s father had to take loans to pay alimony to his wife. He works all night as an auto driver and he sleeps during part of the day, to pay off his debt and manages a meagre sum for his family. Lakshmi has no mother and her father too is unable to care for her due to his work pressures. Lakshmi has not received any formal education as the mother had kept her in a village house for the past many years. Now her mother's absence has left her with emotional scars that have made her shy and withdrawn in his interactions with others. Living in the narrow alleys of Dharavi, she shares a tiny one-room chawl with her father, elder brother, and extended family. She primarily speaks Tamil and is yet to learn other languages. Lakshmi is set to join the Happy Kids program with Viraj Shriram Centennial High School in Grade 1.
