Umang, 11 years old, is the second son of a single mother, Ruby Devi. Umang’s father passed away in 2023 after prolonged treatment for his psychiatric conditions. Ruby Devi, who was a homemaker, now works two domestic jobs and earns INR 9500 every month. She uses up her income to repay her late husband’s business and personal loans. As the youngest sister of seven brothers, she sometimes receives minimal financial support to fend for the family’s living expenses whereas almost all of her income goes into repayment of liabilities. Ruby Devi acknowledges that her son Umang is intelligent and sensitive, and requires support to provide Umang with good education and access to opportunities, which in turn can help her take on more work to quickly settle her husband’s debts. Umang is enthusiastic about joining the Happy Kids Program and will be inducted in Grade 4 of Viraj Shriram Centennial High School, Boisar from the year 2024.
